    Love is in the air, and I don't mean Valentine's Day love!! The County is now playing catch up, it’s in full gear on hiring police officers, dispatchers and other county personnel. We are buying cars, cleaning parks and cutting the grass at record pace. Now what could be the cause of all this good will coming from downtown? Yes, you got it, its election time. So we go from threats of mass layoffs, to record setting hiring. We are hiring officers from other departments and doing whatever we can do to fix the damage from years of neglect. I hope that the elected officials have learned their lesson. Those who stood by silently, while watching this diabolical mess unfold, who now find themselves In front of reporters with TV cameras trying to explain the rash of killings of young children. The answer in my opinion, was and still is very simple...stop cutting public safety. 

    Now some helpful advice, to our City Police chiefs out there. The time to be nice to your officers, should be all the time, not when they have been hired by other departments, and are in the process of leaving your agency. We have a Chief in Pinecrest who has found himself in this situation. The PBA has been going to their budget meetings, telling them of these problems. The Manager has told the Mayor and City Council that it’s not true and that the PBA is “WRONG.” Well as of this writing, eight (8) officers have resigned, and now the City wants to take the officers to lunch in an attempt to mend fences. Sorry, it’s too late. They have moved on. There will be more to come regarding this issue. Then I spoke to another officer, who has been a reserve officer for three (3) years. She had continuously asked her Chief about a full time position, and was told he just couldn’t make happen. So, she applied with another police department and was hired. Her previous employer gets wind of it, begs her to stay, and telling her that he just got the “ok” to hire her full-time, but he was too late, she had moved on, as she should have. So to our police chiefs out there, start treating you officers fairly, and with respect. If not, you will be answering to your bosses on why your officers are leaving.  

    A good friend of mine sent me the following, this was New York in 1925; 

    During the 1925 budget hearing Police Commissioner Richard Enright, requested an additional 2,000 patrolman. Enright turned to Mayor Hylan, who convinced the Board to meet Enright halfway. The department's authorized strength was raised by 1,000 patrolmen.

    The head of the Sergeants Benevolent Association was in attendance at the hearing an asked the Mayor to give his members a raise since they earned only fifty-six cents more per day than their subordinates.                                                                                                                               
    Hylan scoffed at the notion that sergeants deserved extra money, because Enright had initiated a pilot program that allowed them to drive automobile's instead of riding bicycles to keep an eye on the patrolmen. Hylan insinuated that by using automobiles to supervise the force, sergeants were actually doing less work and therefore not deserving of any extra pay. “Yes”, elections do have consequences.

    Congratulations to Major Julie Miller and the Cutler Bay police officers who organized the Black and Blue Fun Run that took place a few months back. The run had a great turn out. Although the day started out nice, shortly after the run had gotten underway, the rain clouds moved in, and as the runners crossed the finish line, the clouds opened up and the torrential rains began, and rain it did. It rained so hard, that the field filled up, and we had water up to our knees. Then a class of police trainees, together with their advisors, began to do push-ups in the rain and mud, at which time Miami-Dade Deputy Director, Juan Perez joined in with them. What an impressive site to see that was!! The event raised over $30,000 for POAT, which helps the kids and family members of officers who have fallen on hard times. Thanks to all the folks who helped out with this event and to all the runners who took the time out of their busy schedules to attend the fun run.

    Speaking of congratulations, let’s hear it for coach Don Shula, and the 1972 Dolphins team on keeping their perfect season record intact. We are safe at least for another year thanks to the Atlanta Falcons for beating the Carolina Panthers. PBA Past President, Mike Clifton, was on hand to congratulate Coach Shula on keeping his perfect record. Congratulations Coach Shula from the gang at the PBA!!! 

    Congratulations, also to Director JD Patterson on his retirement from the Miami Dade Police Department. We here at the PBA, also wish him well in his retirement, and thank him for his service to our community.
